For more than 40 years, Pat Metheny has been changing the face of jazz music, winning 20 Grammys along the way. The Pat Metheny Unity Group has broken down barriers, creating a true union of jazz, fusion, blues, Latin, and many more wildly diverse genres. On Thursday, March 13, the Pat Metheny Unity Group will take the stage at the Capitol Theatre.
Who is the Unity Group? The Pat Metheny Unity Group is a super-group of legendary jazz musicians. Members include Pat Metheny (guitar), Ben Williams (bass), Giulio Carmassi (multi-instrument), and Chris Potter (saxophone).
What makes them unique? Lots! Pat Metheny started incorporating synthesizer into his music in the ’70s, before people considered it a serious instrument. This innovative and revolutionary orchestration has also become his trademark. Metheny enjoys setting himself apart from the rest of the jazz community, saying, “I’m sort of on to the next thing, all the time.”
What do people think? The Santa Barbara Independent said “truly one of the most impressive displays of sustained musicianship that I have witnessed.” The Vancouver Sun calls their performance “shimmering and atmospheric.” And The Oregonian said the group “play[s] with the fearlessness that all jazz groups should possess.”
