LITERARY LESSONS
Cabaret

LITERARY LESSONS will enable the Shubert Theater to provide in-depth learning about literature to a new generation of potential theatergoers. In addition, this partnership supports an important aspect of our mission by providing a resource for educators while also engaging several local professional artists.

The LITERARY LESSONS program affords students who would otherwise not have the opportunity to experience live, professional theater. The program introduces students to a classic Broadway musical. Allowing students to gain an understanding of the creativity, collaboration, commitment, and dedication necessary to write a script and produce a play or musical is invaluable. From this experience, they are afforded a glimpse of the many different types of jobs and careers that are affiliated with live theater.

This year’s project was made possible with support from the League of American Broadway Theatres and Producers, United Illuminating, the David Beckerman Foundation and Wachovia.

MOVIN2 & THE PILOBOLUS PROJECT
Pilobolus/MOVIN’2, a residency of the world renowned Pilobolus Dance Company, is an innovative four-week residency that reaches more than 400 students in New Haven and the Shoreline. Pilobolus master artists lead movement/dance classes that enable students to experience creative dance for themselves, in an innovative approach that allows a smooth integration of students with all types of experience with dance.
. The centerpiece of the residency is MOVIN’2, focusing on “at-risk” middle-school boys, determined to be “at-risk of failure in the classroom” by school officials. After-school classes taught by Pilobolus master artists encourage teamwork, trust, mentoring, focus, concentration, self-respect, and respect for one another, while challenging young people to creatively solve movement problems as a group. Entering its twelfth year, this residency partnership provides transformative opportunities for these students.

Last year, the program served 12 schools in the New Haven community over a three-week period. In addition, MOVIN’2 at Betsy Ross Arts Magnet school provided 15 at-risk boys with an afterschool dance/movement program that culminated in a final performance for family and friends at the school.

This project was made possible with support from the Pfizer, Inc., United Illuminating, the David Beckerman Foundation and Wachovia.
