The Mighty Morton Organ Restoration
Preserving a Piece of Ohio Theatre History
The “Mighty Morton” Theatre Organ presented by Ice Miller has been the soul of the Ohio Theatre since the doors opened in 1928. Now, nearly a century later, CAPA is proud to begin an exciting new chapter: the restoration of the organ’s original console, a vital piece of this historic instrument.
Follow along as we document the restoration of the “Mighty Morton” Theatre Organ console—sharing milestones, photos, and behind-the-scenes moments from removal to its return.
A Storied Legacy
Built by the Robert Morton Organ Company of Van Nuys, California, the “Mighty Morton” was installed just in time for the Ohio Theatre’s grand opening on March 17, 1928. It is one of only four identical organs built for Loew’s theaters—and the only one still in its original home.
Over the decades, this instrument has provided unforgettable musical experiences—from silent film scores to pre-show concerts—cementing its role as a cherished part of our city’s cultural heritage.
Restoration Begins
While the “Mighty Morton” has been lovingly maintained with routine care and small repairs, it hasn’t undergone a major restoration since 1987. After nearly 40 years, a more comprehensive effort is needed to ensure the organ plays on for generations to come.
The project began with a free organ concert held during CAPA’s 50th anniversary (Feb. 2019) and has continued through various means, including donations from CAPA patrons and community members. Thanks to the generosity of the community, CAPA has received 788 gifts from families, corporate friends, and a few family foundations. These donations have collectively contributed nearly $200,000 towards the restoration project and have been instrumental in reaching this significant milestone.
Following the 2025 CAPA Summer Movie Series, the organ console will be carefully transported to a team of expert restorers in Indiana. The goal: bring Morton back to life in time for the 2026 movie series, stronger and more sonorous than ever.
Future Plans
Looking ahead, CAPA recognizes the ongoing need for community support to ensure the “Mighty Morton” continues to enchant audiences for the next 100 years and beyond. To help sustain the organ’s maintenance and restoration, The McCutchen Foundation has made a generous gift to seed an endowment specifically for the organ.
