Description

Filmed over the course of 20 years in Columbus, Ohio, and shot through the lens of a loving friend, this biographical documentary captures the art, worlds, livelihood, and creativity of Mr. Ricky “Ice Cream” Jackson. Witness the powerful story of Ice Cream’s journey through life’s challenges to find happiness and fulfillment in a caring community and radical self acceptance.

It was 1975 and Ice Cream was in his first year of college. He was 6’6, writing poems with a bright future and a full-ride basketball scholarship. All he remembers is drinking some orange juice from the cafeteria and then wildly tripping in his dorm room. From then on, what Ice Cream shares as “the life after the mickey,” diagnoses, institutionalizations, and medications were abundant. We see Ricky battle and overcome addiction, cancer, and homelessness, traumas that may be common place, but are never mundane. This film revels in its creative storytelling, taking cues from the subject’s unique perspective to craft artistically impressive visuals. Balancing humor, grit and an abundance of love, you will be inspired by the story of Cream and his community.

No matter your brain type, when community, support, kindness and love are abundant humanity can thrive. Witness the powerful story of Ice Cream’s journey through life’s challenges to find happiness and fulfillment in a caring community and radical self acceptance.

Whether you’ve personally experienced psychosis, know someone who has, or have only heard about it in the media you can learn and heal from this film. It reminds us of the depth, colors, and shades of mental durability through art, humanity, and connection.

May we all be a little more like Ice Cream and his community. We love you, Ice Cream
