Robert Redford’s directorial debut earned him Best Director and Best Picture Oscars. It follows the Jarrett family as they come to terms with the accidental death of their oldest son. Moore was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of a mother so wrapped up in projecting the right image that she doesn’t see her remaining son’s struggles with guilt. Hutton turns in an Oscar-winning performance in his big screen debut, and Sutherland is the father trying to hold them all together.
