One of the late great Rob Reiner’s most beloved films, Stand by Me is the coming-of-age tale of four friends on a quest to become heroes by finding the body of a missing teen in the Oregon forest. Gordie (Will Wheaton), the film’s narrator, is grappling with grief after losing his older brother and the knowledge that his parents will never love him as they loved his brother. Chris (River Phoenix) is trying to leave behind his family’s reputation as the town troublemakers, and Teddy (Corey Feldman) is fighting his own inner demons under the burden of a mentally unstable father. Vern (Jerry O’Connell), the fourth of the group, is usually the punchline of town jokes, but is the one who knows approximately where the body is. As the boys follow the train tracks further from their town, they find themselves coming to terms with their battles, both as a group and individuals. Based on Stephen King’s 1982 novella, The Body.
