65TH ANNIVERSARY!
Tensions between the Jets and the Sharks, a Puerto Rican gang moving in on their territory in 1950’s New York is the backdrop for West Side Story, the iconic musical reimagining of “Romeo and Juliet.” Released just two years after the Broadway show closed, West Side Story was nominated for 11 Academy Awards, winning ten of them. It’s the story of Maria (Natalie Wood), the younger sister of the Sharks’ leader Bernardo (George Chakiris), and Tony (Richard Beymer), a former Jet who is trying stay out of the gang drama while remaining friends, particularly with his “womb to tomb” Riff (Russ Tamblyn). When Maria and Tony meet at a dance, it’s love at first sight, despite the complications of being on opposite sides of the turf war. As the tensions escalate, the young couple are caught in the deadly crossfire and can only hope that their love is allowed to grow “Somewhere.”
Cast: Natalie Wood, George Chakiris, Rita Moreno
