All-Male Ballet Breaking Gender Roles

Do you love ballet, but also a good laugh? Then Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo is the perfect ticket for you! This professional, all-male ballet company travels the world performing their own interpretation of traditional “en pointe” ballet with a playful and comedic approach.

In ancient Greece up through Renaissance court ballet, men would perform every role, whether the character was male or female. But around the 19th century, the spotlight turned from male dancers to female dancers. Ballerinas were able to dance on pointe, which many thought men were unable to do. So, in modern ballet, men became more of a “prop,” performing mostly lifts, and rarely being featured through the entire ballet.

By performing classic and traditional ballet pieces on pointe, Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo (Trocks for short) have amazed audiences everywhere by breaking gender roles, while radiating elegance, beauty, and comedy. Much like ancient Greece theatre, they perform in traditional female costuming, makeup, and overall presentation. They get into character with blocked out eyebrows, heavy contour, dramatic false eyelashes, and ALL the lip liner. Admittedly, it’s a little more drag-queen, and a little less ballerina. But don’t be fooled, the Trocks are all professional dancers that perform the full range of ballet and modern dance repertoire to comedic perfection.

Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo performs at the Ohio Theatre for one night only at 7:30pm on February 28. You can buy your tickets here or at the CAPA Ticket Center.
